Credentials That Matter

What is a CALT?

A Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) is the highest level of certification in the field of academic language therapy. CALTs are rigorously trained specialists who provide structured literacy intervention for students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences.

Rigorous Certification

CALT certification is awarded by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). Candidates must complete extensive coursework, supervised practicum hours, and pass a comprehensive written and oral examination.

Orton-Gillingham Based Training

CALTs are trained in Orton-Gillingham based approaches — the gold standard in structured literacy. This includes programs like Take Flight and JET, developed specifically for students with dyslexia.

Multisensory Structured Language

Therapy is diagnostic, explicit, and systematic. CALTs use multisensory techniques — engaging visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways — to build lasting reading and writing skills.

Ongoing Professional Development

Maintaining CALT certification requires continued education and professional development, ensuring our therapists stay current with the latest research in the Science of Reading.

"When you work with a CALT, you're working with a specialist who has invested hundreds of hours learning exactly how to help students with dyslexia — not just a tutor, but a trained therapist dedicated to your child's success."

Eva Jo Hickerson, M.Ed., CALT

Certified Academic Language Therapist

Eva Jo is a dedicated educator with 32 years of experience. Teaching reading has always been her true calling — a passion that comes from deep within. There's no greater joy than witnessing the moment a student begins to read independently and seeing their confidence soar.

She earned a master's degree in Education and became a certified Reading Specialist. While teaching kindergarten, she trained as a Reading Recovery teacher, and more recently became a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). Through extensive training in academic language therapy — especially Take Flight, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach — she's gained powerful tools to unlock the reading process.

"Teaching reading is my passion — it lives in my soul. So, let's do this together and help your child become the confident, capable reader they were meant to be."

Sharon Kinzie, M.Ed., CALT

Certified Academic Language Therapist

For over 30 years, Sharon has dedicated her life to education — as a teacher, a principal, and now as a Certified Academic Language Therapist. She spent 21 years in the classroom and 9 years as an elementary principal, where she had the privilege of supporting both students and educators every day.

Sharon became a CALT through intensive training in the Take Flight curriculum from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, and has continued to expand her knowledge with additional training in Orton-Gillingham-based programs and other Science of Reading approaches.

"Every child deserves to feel capable, seen, and empowered. Helping them get there isn't just what I do — it's who I am."
